Eirini Kakopierou a.k.a. Karagöza (any pronouns) is a Cypriot multi-media artist in their early twenties based in Amsterdam. Eirini’s work surrounds the themes of identity, gender and roots which are usually expressed through sociopolitical satire. Many times they appear as their drag persona Karagözα – a gender bender jester with references from Middle-Eastern shadow play theater.
Eirini’s practice takes a theatrical and performative manner that acts as an initiate for conversation. It comes in forms of drawing, print-making, sound, film, performance and collage. They use recycled materials and/or easily accessible mediums such as fabrics, scraps, “trash”, clown make-up or digital means. Their body and voice function as their main tools to create, communicate and contribute with collective settings.
